The Home Stretch
Parents,

Hope your break is going well and you are enjoying the recent nice weather.

MOST
of the students in class are without supplies.  I have exhausted all personal classroom supplies and these are essential to student achievement.  Please visit the Dollar Store, Target, etc.  Your child NEEDS to have:
pencils, scissors, glue sticks, colored pencils or crayons, and  HIGHLIGHTERs.  Please restock; your child needs these.

We may be entering the home stretch, but it is a not an easy final run.  We will be gearing up to finish the 5th grade curriculum as well as reviewing for the Reading, Math, and Science SOLs that are coming in May (LATE) and June.  Students will receiving Math and Reading review packets that MUST be worked on independently so individual areas of weaknesses can be identified and reviewed.  Students have also received a 4th grade Science review 'workbook' filled with all the essential knowledge they need to remember from 4th as our Science SOL is based on both 4th and 5th knowledge.  They should have been studying over the break and quizzes by units will be weekly once we return.  They will also receive 5th grade Science Review cards in mid April.  Please take the time and review these questions and answers with your child:  IF THEY KNOW THESE, THEY KNOW ALL THE SCIENCE THAT WILL BE ON THE SOL.

Also, please try to keep absences to only essential ones.  Each day is filled with new material and review.  Thank you in advance for your support.   ksl
We're Back
Welcome back!  It seems like a very long time since we were last in school.  Let me update you on a few dates:
March 2- Writing SOL - multiple choice
March 3 - Writing SOL - direct writing.
Please try to insure that your child does not miss any days-we have a lot to make up and review before these tests.

Your child also had a light project due Feb. 8th.  The assignment was given, along with a rubric, two weeks before the due date.  These projects need to be turned in or a failing grade will be given.  I know we have been out of school, but this should have been an added bonus time to complete the project.

Homework tonight:   2005 Writing SOL practice         Don't Take it Literally (idiom) ws
Science 56.3 worksheet-due Friday  (Students may use their books and study guides to complete)

Thanks for all your help at home.
ksl
Thank you
Dear Parents,
Thank you for your thoughts, prayers, and patience while I had two of my children hospitalized-one for a great reason.....a new baby -redheaded - girl!   All is well now and we are back on track.

Report cards will be sent home Feb. 8th so we are in the final days of the marking period.  If your child is missing an assignment or needs to redo an assignment for a better grade, it will be sent home today or tomorrow.

Also, I missed conference day so if you feel you would like to see me before report cards, just send in a note.  Otherwise, we can wait until after report cards.  Your choice-I am available.

We are now working on:
Fractions: lowest terms, improper fractions, ordering fractions....by Thurs. we will begin addition of fractions
Writing: conventions (grammar/mechanics)/writing to a prompt
Reading:  practice SOL tests on line, cause and effect, main idea, comprehension

Welcomes and Farewells
Parents,
As you know, we had to add a new fifth grade classroom due to numbers.  This was not done lightly, but in the best interests of each and every student.  It is just as hard for a teacher to lose a student as it is for the student to lose their teacher.  Trust me-I VERY RELUCTANTLY- moved 6 students into the new classroom.  The decision of which students were moved was made by the administration and a small team to create a positive, successful new class.  I was very sad to see those students leave my room- I would have loved to keep each of them.  They are all terrific individuals and I loved each of their personalities.  I will miss them- but , I will also keep checking up on them and staying in touch.  I wish I could have fit them all in one classroom.  On the flip side, four students were moved into my classroom and I would like to welcome them and let them know I am very anxious to get to know you both as a student and individual.

Schoolwise:

Geography- we have just taken our New England test and will be beginning the Mid-Atlantic States.  Ask your child about Connecticut!
Science- we will be concluding our review of Matter and will take the test on Friday.  Should there be snow, the test WILL be on  Monday.
Math- we are beginning our investigation into fractions and will soon be simplifying, adding and subtracting fractions.
Writing- a new writing assignment will be given out later this week. Details will be posted on this site.  Please be advised that the Writing SOL is in MARCh.  You can help by checking your child's work and explaining any errors you may note.
Reading-we are continuing our small group Guided Reading, literature circles, and word study.  Word Study tests are every Weds.

Students will be taking 2 tests this week and next to see who would most benefit from the BOSS (SOL tutorial) program.  Once graded, you will be notified if your child qualifies.  A late bus is provided for the two days after school program.

Interims went home today....please return the ungraded copy, signed.

As always, I am at school by 7am and you are welcome to contact me by phone-email (lundks@pwcs.edu), or drop in  at any time.
Thank you for all YOU do to support your child and his/her learning.

12/8/09
Parents,
Sorry about the lapse, but I have been having trouble accessing the site.  Things are moving along well.  Interims will be coming home on the 22nd and your child will be notified this Monday of any assignments that are missing.  Remember, any assignment with a low grade may be made up-and a new grade given.  Not many students are taking advantage of this.  Also, ask your child to bring home his/her Science and Social Studies notebooks as all papers are kept inside these notebooks.

We are finishing our Onomatopoeia stories(due Weds.) and our trade books (due Friday).  Any homework for tonight I will list at the end of the day since I am once again up and running.  Thanks for all you do.

The Things We Do
Dear Parents,
This will be my third attempt to get you updated on our activities.  Hopefully, this time it will work.
Thanksgiving is approaching and I wanted to let you know what we will be covering in class between now and the Winter Recess.

Language Arts:  SOL5.9  The student will edit for correct grammar, punctuation, capitalization and spelling. The students need to start checking over their own work and self-editing.  There are many errors that they should be catching.
SOL 5.9 b   Students will use adjectives and adverbs to enhance writing.

Writing:  SOL 5.8  Students will write for a variety of purposes and to a variety of audiences.  They will form ideas, choose planning strategies, organize information, and use precise adjectives.  The students have just finished two phenomenal writings-one based on Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs (ideas, organization, word choice ) and another based on Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, NO-GOOd, very bad day (ideas, oganization, sequencing).  Our Language Arts specialists has read them and feels we should type them and create a book for everyone to enjoy.  So, if there are any volunteers......They are currently working on a Turkey story where they must escape the Thanksgiving fate.
Another focus is to create exciting leads and strong conclusions.

Reading:  5.4 Students will read fiction with accuracy and fluency, use context clues, and use root words with prefixes and suffixes.  Students have a three part reading session-Guided Reading which is done in small groups based on skill needs, Trade books that are used for literal and inferenial comprehension, summarization, and figurative language, and word study.  Students have a list and flash card set of prefixes they should know.

Geography:  Northeast.  Students will be learning the New England States, capitals, resources, and physical features.  Included in this instruction will be historical events and people that influenced the region.  Following New England (GO PATRIOTS), we will move to the Middle Atlantic States.

Science:  SOL 5.4  Students will investigate and understand the key concepts of matter:
It is anything that takes up space and has mass, can be in a solid, liquid or gas form, the components (atoms, etc), and the physical and chemical properties.  Students will be doing experiments in class as well as at home (these will be the easier ones)

Remember that Wednesday is an early dismissal-12:15.
Have a great Thanksgiving.  I am grateful that you are sharing your child with me.
